9. Given that the UK maintains a nuclear deterrent in the form of submarine launched Trident missiles and that the UK’s nuclear warheads are manufactured and serviced in Berkshire, how do you feel about these warheads being transported regularly in convoys along the A34 through the Bicester and Woodstock Constituency to/from their journey to the Royal Naval Base at Faslane in Scotland?
Local Authority and Emergency Services Information here.
Ian Middleton (Green Party):
“I don’t feel they should be transported anywhere. I think all nuclear weapons should be dismantled and put out of use. I can certainly see absolutely no viable scenario where they would be of any use to this country or any way we could use them expect in a situation where use of the would already be futile. I would rather the £180bn that Trident requires was spent on ensuring we have top level conventional defence capabilities and well looked after armed forces personnel. The remainder of that budget could be spent on more overseas aid and support for vital public services like the NHS and Social care.”
Veronica Oakeshott (Labour Party):
“I support our nuclear deterrent and feel confident in our country’s ability to maintain it in a safe fashion for our constituency and every other constituency on the route.”
Calum Miller (Liberal Democrats):
“It is obviously important that the UK is protected, however it does seem extraordinary that the maintenance of these weapons is such a long way from their deployment.”
